Kettle's Yard - Light Spells (Pinhole Photographs)

Light Spells is a joint project between Graham Murrell and Kathryn Faulkner. Over the period of a year we are working together to develop a body of photographic work that refers to the qualities of light that illuminate and animate the very particular space and objects inside Kettle's Yard house.

I am concerned with the gathering of light and the layering of time within a single frame and use the long exposures of a pinhole camera to capture the evanescent quality of sunlight. I regard the pinhole camera as a miniature equivalent of the rooms where light enters and burns its presence. By deciding not to use a tripod and placing the camera directly amongst the objects in the house, the photographs reveal new viewpoints and unexpected details of surface and reflection.

By laying out light sensitive Printing Out Paper (POP) and directly exposing objects in the rooms I have sought to investigate the qualities of the glass collection in the house. In some ways the glass photograms simply make themselves - acting like lenses, absorbing and refracting available light and recording the passage of time.

The exhibition showed at Kettle's Yard Gallery from 28th July - 23rd September 2001.

Light Spells the book was published in 2002 by Kettle's Yard (ISBN 0 907074 97 9)
