Moving Into Stillness
A photograph is usually associated with the instant moment; calling a halt in the flow of time, it is customarily a freeze frame shot in a fraction of a second. Pinhole photography allows for a longer exposure, infinite depth of field and a reconsideration of what it may be possible to depict on film. This new series has been made in collaboration with a number of yoga teachers who live and teach in London. Duration becomes the key element and the delicate equation of light and time is made manifest through the signs of a body holding an asana for a number of minutes. These postures involve intense mental and physical control and a bringing together of internal and external forces to achieve a point of balance. The space around the figure is static but there is softness through the movement of the body during exposure. It becomes a transient form held by the architecture of the space and invites the viewer to slow down and contemplate photographic time and stillness in a different way. These images draw attention to the beauty of finding and maintaining balance and the art of moving into stillness. |
